Abstract
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was acetoacetylated with acetoacetic anhydride (Diketene). Guinea pigs immunized with acetoacetylated CEA showed delayed skin hypersensitivity and lymphocyte transformation after stimulation with unmodified CEA, but demonstrated very low levels of circulating anti-CEA antibodies. The dissociation of cellular and humoral immunity could prove useful in the further study of their relative role in immunologic resistance to tumor growth. This method of selectively stimulating cellular immunity may also be of value to the immunotherapy of cancer.
