Pyrogenic bacterial materials in doses too small to produce the Shwartzman phenomenon will induce in rabbits a state of nonreactivity to materials which are ordinarily potent in eliciting the phenomenon. The mechanism of this type of resistance is probably similar to that which is responsible for tolerance to the effect of bacterial products on body temperature but other possibilities need to be ruled out.
