Summary
Administration of cortisone may shorten or prolong survival of chick embryos infected with influenza B virus, depending on the timing of its injection.
Injection of cortisone 24–42 hours after infection results in suppression of inflammation and prolongation of survival of virus-infected chick embryos.
The ameliorating effects of cortisone in this situation are explicable on the basis of its anti-inflammatory action in the chorioallantoic membrane.
