The cofactor necessary for the activation of a salivary bactericidin active against Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4357 was identified both in vitro and in vivo as thiocyanate. Although iodide in sufficient concentration would also substitute for the cofactor, the amount required was incompatible with the concentration found in saliva.
