Summary
Lymphocyte cultures devoid of phagocytic cells fail to undergo a blastogenic response to antigens. The addition of autologous or homologous macrophages to these cultures restores the response. While both lymphocytes and macrophages are required, the lymphocytes undergo blastogenesis and determine the immunologic specificity of the response.
