We have been unable to obtain evidence of attenuation of the poliomyelitis virus by 1 per cent sodium ricinoleate.3
Thirty animals received 5 doses each by subcutaneous inoculation at weekly intervals. Sixteen of the animals developed sufficient neutralizing substance in their blood to neutralize a single constant infective dose of virus. All but 2 succumbed to the intracerebral inoculation of the same dose of virus.
This work is supported by grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Friedsam Foundation, and by a grant from the President's Birthday Ball Commission for Infantile Paralysis Research.
In a personal communication Kolmer agreed with us that no appreciable attenuation occurred.
