Summary
Pentadecylcatechol, a component of poison ivy extract, is a potent contact sensitizer for guinea pigs when injected subcutaneously as an emulsion with mycobacteria (Freund's complete adjuvant) or by percutaneous application. Injection without mycobacteria or oral administration induces a state of immunologic unresponsiveness to contact sensitivity.
