On the cover: Luminal gut bacteria (orange-yellow) were visualized in an ileal section from an uninfected C57BL/6 mouse using FISH. Cellular nuclei (blue) were stained using DAPI. Gut content contains bacteria and autofluorescent (yellow-green) food components. Following oral infection with T. gondii, overgrowth of Gram-negative bacteria is observed associated with translocation of bacteria to submucosal tissues contributing to ileal inflammation and ileal necrosis. Heimesaat, M. M., S. Bereswill, A. Fischer, D. Fuchs, D. Struck, J. Niebergall, H.-K. Jahn, I. R. Dunay, A. Moter, D. M. Gescher, R. R. Schumann, U. B. Göbel, and O. Liesenfeld. 2006. Gram-negative bacteria aggravate murine small intestinal Th1-type immunopathology following oral infection with Toxoplasma gondii. J. Immunol. 177: 8785–8795.
